The Metropolitan Opera Guild’s School Partnerships use opera to provide arts learning opportunities for all students.
Our approach thoughtfully connects classroom learning with libretto writing, music composition, staging, acting, singing, literary analysis, and critical response – and provides students with opportunities to create, present, and attend opera.
Kindergarteners at P.S. 15 in Brooklyn sing a favorite warm-up song in their hand-made opera costumes after a performance.
Opera is multi-disciplinary, involving music, theatre, movement, dance, and visual arts. Students and teachers have the opportunity to explore teamwork, problem solving and personal creativity. Students have opportunities to learn and grow in several art forms simultaneously.
Opera provides a powerful strategy for integrated instruction the connections to other classroom subjects, including language arts, social studies, and foreign language.
Opera also provides a forum for critical thinking, artistic and cultural literacy, and both individual and community response.
