Part of the Pants Roles series

Some composers, Mozart and Offenbach among them, wanted to experiment with crossing both gender and class. For Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, that required the replacement of the traditional castrato with a mezzo-soprano to play Count Almaviva's young page Cherubino. In Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, the Muse of Poetry disguises herself as the title character's best friend, the male student Nicklausse.
